Simplify relay setting and application while reducing inventory by using one relay for all of your capacitor bank needs. The versatile SEL-487V Capacitor Bank Protection, Automation, and Control System can handle grounded and ungrounded, single- and double-wye capacitor bank applications. It provides sensitive voltage differential and current unbalance protection with compensation adjustment for small voltage differential levels due to variations in individual capacitor elements from manufacturing, PT, or instrument transformer measurement errors. Application-based settings simplify setup and installation while fault-finding logic locates faulty capacitor units, speeding up necessary maintenance. Synchrophasor technology provides situational awareness and real-time control.
Capacitor Bank Protection—Protect a variety of capacitor configurations, including grounded and ungrounded, single- and double-wye configurations. The SEL-487V has phase- and neutral-current unbalance elements and phase- and neutral-voltage differential elements to provide reliable protection for virtually any application. Apply the IEC 60255-149-compliant thermal model to trigger control actions or issue warnings in adverse operating conditions.
Faulted-Capacitor Location—Save time and money using the relay's advanced failure-phase identification logic. The relay provides discrete indications of the phase and section of the capacitor bank that has the faulted capacitor units.
Capacitor Bank Monitoring—Record disturbances automatically at key capacitor bank locations using optional voltage sag, swell, and interruption (VSSI) recording. Harmonic metering provides measurements from the fundamental through 15th harmonic as well as information on total harmonic distortion.
Capacitor Control—Obtain full control of capacitor banks without additional devices. The SEL-487V-1 can operate the capacitor bank based on voltage, VAR, power factor, or time-of-day/day-of-week scheduling. Use IEEE C37.118-compliant synchrophasors to make operation decisions to improve power system stability and reliability.

The display allows you to control and view the status of disconnects and breakers.
The easy-to-use keypad aids simple navigation.
Front-panel LEDs indicate custom alarms and provide information to assist dispatchers and line crews with rapid power restoration.
Programmable operator pushbuttons with user-configurable labels allow front-panel customization.
Optional trip/close pushbuttons and indicating LEDs allow breaker control independent of the relay.
Choose from a vertical or horizontal, panel-mount or rack-mount chassis and different size options.
Communications protocols include FTP, Telnet, synchrophasors, DNP3 LAN/WAN, the Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP), and IEC 61850 Edition 2 (optional feature).
Use three rear EIA-232 ports for Mirrored Bits communications, DNP3, SCADA, and engineering access.
Six current and six voltage channels support applications for grounded and ungrounded, single- and double-wye capacitor configurations.
Power supply options include 48–125 Vdc or 110–120 Vac; or 125–250 Vdc or 110–240 Vac.
Achieve Complete Capacitor Bank Protection and Control With One Relay
Protect and control grounded and ungrounded, single- and double-wye capacitor bank applications with a single relay. The SEL-487V includes both voltage differential and overcurrent elements for complete protection.
Provide Flexible Multibank Protection and Control
Provide sensitive capacitor failure detection with application-based settings that provide voltage and current unbalance elements. Select from voltage, power factor, VAR, or time-of-day/day-of-week control schemes. Prevent equipment damage to capacitor banks and switching apparatus using control instability (hunting) detection.
Automatically Sequence Capacitor Banks
Use the universal sequencer in the SEL-487V-1 to replace SELogic control equations or an external programmable logic controller (PLC). It automatically sequences up to three capacitor banks on and/or off, based on which capacitor bank has accumulated the most operations. SELogic-based settings allow a variety of inputs for the sequencing variable, including time, number of operations, kVARs, and fixed (1, 2, 3). It is also possible to reset and preload functions.
Simplify Settings Calculations
Automatically perform calculations for application-based settings using IEEE C37.99 compliant settings assistant software.
Save Time Identifying Faults
Find faulty capacitor units using the built-in fault locating feature.
Improve Power System Stability and Reliability With Built-In Synchrophasor Measurement System
Obtain real-time measurements of electrical quantities and provide local control based on wide-area measurements.
Apply Flexible Communications
Control and Monitor Devices Using Front-Panel One-Line Diagrams
Control a breaker and up to ten disconnect switches from the front panel. Select your own system bay configuration from the built-in mimic diagram options, and add programmable analog quantities for readouts.
Automate and Control With SELogic
Implement control equations with SELogic variables, timers, latch bits, and remote-control elements for customizing advanced protection and control schemes. Use control logic to replace panel control switches, RTU-to-relay wiring, latching relays, and traditional indicating panel lights.
Improve Monitoring and Asset Management
Monitor and protect critical substation assets with IEC 60255-149 thermal models. Other monitoring features include loss-of-potential, substation battery voltage, and comprehensive breaker wear monitoring.
Simplify Post-Fault Analysis With Built-In Metering and Reporting
The SEL-487V includes oscillographic event reports, Sequential Events Recorder (SER) reporting, and three-phase power metering. Use these features to improve system testing and simplify post-fault analysis.
