Electric power is everywhere. From critical, life-saving operations to everyday tasks like cooking a meal, lighting our homes, and even connecting with friends, electric power has enhanced nearly every aspect of life today. All of this is made possible by the electric power grid—a complex system of generators, wires, transformers, and substations.
From the generation source, high-voltage electricity travels great distances along transmission lines through a series of substations until it reaches communities, where it gets distributed to homes, schools, businesses, and more.
The devices we make at SEL are embedded in this network—protecting the flow of power at every stage. They prevent blackouts; help restore power faster if it goes out; add cybersecurity, automation, and communication; and incorporate new, cutting-edge technologies that we invent here at SEL.
When electric power is safe and reliable, it changes peoples’ lives. Our culture empowers individuals—like you—to support this mission, every day. We are 100 percent employee-owned, which means it is every employee’s responsibility and opportunity to make our company as successful as possible.
Every employee at SEL has a purpose; every employee matters. No matter how big or small a task, the daily actions, ideas, and decisions of SEL employees shape the success of our company.
We live by our values. They embody our attitudes and guide how we work every day. If these are values that you share as well, then you’ve come to the right place.
At SEL, you’re encouraged to create your own career path. Through continuing education programs, which provide tuition assistance, job shadowing, and apprenticeships, as well as learning on the job, you can realize your full potential and be a life-long learner.
The health and wellbeing of our employees and their families is important to us as a company. The benefits listed below are just a snapshot of what we offer. No matter where you are in the world, we are committed to offering outstanding benefits to our employees.
As part of a long-term strategy for sustained growth, stability, and customer focus, SEL became an employee-owned company in 1994 and transitioned to 100 percent employee ownership in 2009. SEL employee owners are committed to improving processes, making decisions, developing new ideas, and taking the company in new directions. SEL is also proud to offer an employee stock ownership program for employees in the United States.
SEL values the health of our employees. That’s why we continually strive to provide the best health insurance possible.
Our Employee Assistance Program is a voluntary program that offers free and confidential assistance to employees and their families in identifying, managing, and resolving personal and work-related issues that may affect job performance or quality of life. The program provides counseling, education, legal advice, and consultation services to improve job performance, health, and the wellbeing of the employee and their family. These services are available in your language 24/7, 365 days a year.
We provide employees with careers, not jobs. That’s why we developed our Path to Your Future program, available to all SEL employees. The program is flexible and provides diverse opportunities to support continuous career development for employees at different stages in their careers.
SEL provides a monthly allowance to eligible employees to encourage continual self-development. We encourage our employees to use this money for education (e.g., buying a textbook or signing up for a class).
SEL provides employees traveling outside of their home countries with travel protection insurance. This insurance includes medical assistance as well as evacuation, travel, and personal assistance. This benefit is available when traveling on company business as well as for leisure or personal travel.
The goal of our wellbeing program is to empower SEL employees and their families by supporting a healthy lifestyle, helping them reach their maximum wellness potential, and enhancing their overall quality of life. We provide regular healthy lifestyle tips and articles, sponsor various activities throughout the year that encourage employee participation, and more.
SEL supports our families through a range of leave options. We provide vacation and sick time as well as leave for special situations, like an employee’s own serious health condition, caring for a family member, or welcoming a new child.
Our founder and president, Dr. Edmund O. Schweitzer, III, first came to Pullman, Washington, as a PhD student. Inspired by his research, he invented the world’s first microprocessor-based digital relay, revolutionizing the power industry and sparking the launch of SEL in 1982. SEL’s corporate headquarters and largest manufacturing facility have remained in Pullman ever since.
Located amid the rolling hills of Eastern Washington, SEL is one of the anchors of a tight-knit community. The company’s main campus is bordered by wheat fields and has two universities as its close neighbors. When you live and work in this area, you become part of a medley of cultures immersed in higher education, art, athletics, and technology. Easily escape for the day or weekend to any one of the surrounding mountains for hiking, biking, and snow activities, or stay in town for cooking classes, art exhibits, festivals, sporting events, farmers markets, local trails, community theater, several cafes, wineries, high-end dining, and more.
