Fiber-Optic Link—Connect a pair of transceivers and an SEL-C809 Single-Mode Fiber-Optic Cable with ST connectors for EIA-232 communication between devices over a fiber-optic link. Create a link from 1 m to 23 km in length using SEL-2829 Fiber-Optic Transceivers.

Fast Data Rates—Transfer data at rates up to 40 kbps.

Safe and Secure Communications—Install fiber-optic connections to isolate communications from ground potential rise and electrical interference.

Details

Flexible, Long-Range Fiber-Optic Communication
Send serial data up to 23 kilometers using single-mode optical fibers with standard ST connectors. Use data rates from 0–40,000 bits per second. Use selector switch to choose between DCE and DTE standard pin configurations and eliminate the use of adapters.

Easy Application
Plug transceiver/modem directly onto a standard 9-pin serial connector (DB-9). No special mounting is required. Receives power from the host device via the connector; no separate power supply or power wiring is needed. Transmits continuous light pulses for simpler testing with an optical meter. Apply with ST terminated fiber cables.

Secure and Reliable Data Transfer
Maximum bit error rate (BER) of 10-9. Far less susceptible to EMI/RFI than copper links. Edge emitting laser provides component isolation and low power consumption.

Improved Safety
Provides improved isolation from ground potential rise and other electrical hazards compared to copper connections.

Mounting Kits

Use an SEL Transceiver Mounting Kit and adapter cable when connecting the transceiver to IEDs with an RJ-45 male serial connector or when the mounting depth is an issue (e.g., in switchgear applications). The following kits provide a simple and secure way to remote-mount the transceiver away from the host connector:

The Firmware IDs for older versions of the firmware can typically be found in Appendix A of the instruction manual.
