Simplifying Recloser Applications Using High-Density Coordination

Segmenting feeders by adding recloser controls is one of the best ways to improve distribution system reliability. However, in traditional time-overcurrent protection schemes, there is a limit to how many reclosers can be deployed on a feeder before coordination margins become too tight.

SEL’s High-Density Coordination (HDC) solution removes that limit by using high-speed communications to coordinate the actions of protective devices. This greatly simplifies the protection scheme and opens new opportunities to improve SAIDI and SAIFI reliability metrics by scaling up the number of reclosers in the system.
