Simplifying Recloser Applications Using High-Density Coordination

Date held: November 3, 2021

Segmenting feeders by adding recloser controls is one of the best ways to improve distribution system reliability. However, in traditional time-overcurrent protection schemes, there is a limit to how many reclosers can be deployed on a feeder before coordination margins become too tight.

SEL’s High-Density Coordination (HDC) solution removes that limit by using high-speed communications to coordinate the actions of protective devices. This greatly simplifies the protection scheme and opens new opportunities to improve SAIDI and SAIFI reliability metrics by scaling up the number of reclosers in the system.

This webinar covers:

  • The principles of HDC and how it compares to traditional coordination schemes.
  • How SEL implemented an HDC scheme at a large U.S. distribution utility using SEL-651R Advanced Recloser Controls and SEL-351S Protection System relays.
  • Methods that expand the reach of HDC schemes, such as using fault transmitters in radial applications.
  • System restoration logic that resolves miscoordination and delivers HDC benefits in systems without communications.
