Fiber-Optic Link—Connect a pair of transceivers and an SEL-C808 Multimode 62.5/125 µm Core Fiber-Optic Cable with ST connectors for EIA-232 communication between devices over a fiber-optic link. Create a link from 1 m to 4 km in length using SEL-2814 Fiber-Optic Transceivers with Hardware Flow Control.

Fast Data Rates—Transfer data at rates up to 115 kbps with the SEL-2814. The SEL-2814 transfers data and hardware flow control signals.

Safe and Secure Communications—Isolate communications connections from ground potential rise and electrical interference. The SEL-2814 also has an option for conformal coating, which provides extra protection from the effects of chemical contaminants in the air to printed circuit boards.

Details

Improve Communications Reliability
Use data rates up to 115.2 kbps for a full-duplex serial link with up to 4 kilometers of multimode optical fiber. This is far less susceptible to EMI/RFI than copper links, with a maximum bit error rate of 10-9. Apply in harsh electrical and physical environments.

Apply Easily
Plug the transceiver/modem directly onto a standard 9-pin serial connector (DB-9). No special mounting is required. The SEL-2814 uses popular ST connectors and requires no jumpers or settings. Eliminate the need for special adapters by using the selector switch to choose DCE or DTE pin usage.

Use Control Lines to Improve Operation
Use the same transceivers and fibers to simultaneously transfer duplex data plus a control signal in each direction. Use for data flow-control to prevent overrunning buffers, key transmitters, or sense equipment problems.

Choose Best Power Source
Provide power from the host device; no separate power supply or power wiring is needed. Or, if the host cannot provide a control line for power, connect an external power supply to the power input jack.

Improve Safety
Provide improved isolation from ground potential rise and other electrical hazards compared to copper connections. The SEL-2814 is an eye-safe, Class 1 laser product.

Mounting Kits

Use an SEL Transceiver Mounting Kit and adapter cable when connecting the transceiver to IEDs with an RJ-45 male serial connector or when the mounting depth is an issue (e.g., in switchgear applications). The following kits provide a simple and secure way to remote-mount the transceiver away from the host connector:

The Firmware IDs for older versions of the firmware can typically be found in Appendix A of the instruction manual.
