Beyond the Nameplate: Selecting Transformer Compensation Settings for Secure Differential Protection

Date held: August 18, 2021
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Incorrect compensation settings are one of the most common causes of transformer relay misoperations. Join us for a technical presentation where SEL presenter Ariana Hargrave explains what you need to know to avoid these costly errors.

We show how to derive the phase shift across a transformer installation and present four simple rules to ensure that you always get your transformer compensation settings correct. We also show how to use an existing application guide to identify incorrect compensation settings during commissioning or after a fault. Finally, we show an event where using Matrix 12 for compensation led to an undesired operation and how following the four rules would have kept the relay secure.
