vAPP FLISR: Introduction to FLISR on SEL DMS

Course Length: 8 Hours (PDHs: 8)
Course Based Fees: $750*
* Plus Applicable Tax

Description

This virtual, instructor-led course is an 8-hour training covered in two half-day sessions with a precourse technical check prior to the start of class.

vAPP FLISR introduces you to fault location, isolation, and service restoration (FLISR). Multiple solutions architectures are discussed, with a focus on the regional and centralized solution used as part of a distribution management system (DMS).

During the lecture sections, you will learn about the fundamentals of automation and FLISR and will receive comprehensive instruction on how to use the SEL DMS application suite. During the hands-on sections, you will work directly with various SEL DMS applications via SEL Blueframe virtual machines to gain real-world experience with FLISR. You will configure a three-feeder multiconnection topology, run simulated permanent faults for several scenarios, analyze reports to troubleshoot unexpected operations, commission the system, and practice post-commissioning activities.

This course is conducted live in the Webex platform with a teleconference or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) option for the audio component. Prior to the course, you will be assigned to a Blueframe virtual machine that is accessed using an authenticator app (e.g., Microsoft Authenticator). IMPORTANT: If you cannot use an authenticator app to access the virtual machine, you will not be able to complete the course.

Audience

This course is designed for protection, automation, and operations engineers and technicians at electric utilities or integrators who focus on distribution networks and create automated solutions to manage distribution systems. It is also suitable for electric utility operators and line crew members who are interested in why and how FLISR systems are configured and operated.

Agenda

  • Introduction to FLISR
  • FLISR Theory
  • SEL Distribution Management System Overview
  • FLISR Configurations
  • FLISR Testing and Commissioning
  • FLISR Post-Commissioning Operations
  • Maintaining FLISR Proficiency

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Summarize distribution automation, the importance of trust, and their connection to FLISR.
  • Explain each phase of FLISR, how various FLISR solutions work, and how they are implemented in a distribution system.
  • Explain how SEL DMS operates and is used to develop FLISR systems.
  • Configure, test, commission, and operate a wide‐area FLISR system using the SEL DMS applications Power System Model and FLISR.
  • Create, read, and analyze FLISR operations reports.
  • Perform post-commissioning maintenance and updates with minimal system interruption.
  • Explain the importance of ongoing FLISR training to maintain proficiency.

Course Preparation

To be successful during this course, ensure the following prior to its start:

  • Your computer has Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge installed.
  • You have dual monitors connected to your computer that allow for multitasking. NOTE: This is not a requirement; however, dual monitors do make it easier to concurrently watch the instructor’s screen and use your virtual machine during hands-on exercises.
  • You can access your assigned SEL Blueframe virtual machine using an authenticator app (e.g., Microsoft Authenticator). IMPORTANT: If you cannot access the virtual machine, you will not be able to complete the course.
  • You have downloaded your digital student materials.
