APP 87: SEL-387 and SEL-587 Percentage-Restrained Differential Relays
APP 87 provides comprehensive application training for the SEL-387 and the SEL‑587 percentage-restrained differential relays, which offer sensitive, high-speed protection for transformer, machine, and bus differential applications. Students (in groups of two) gain hands-on experience in communicating, setting, metering, monitoring, retrieving and analyzing event reports, and performing control functions by working directly with SEL-387 and SEL-587 Relays. Course topics include:
APP 101: Hands-On Introduction to SEL Relays
APP 101 provides hands-on, introductory-level training for new SEL relay users transitioning from electromechanical devices to digital relay application. Students will learn the basic concepts necessary to successfully apply, communicate, and gather data from an SEL-351S Protection System, with special emphasis on how to set up and navigate SEL settings software.
APP 300G: SEL-300G Generator Relay
This course provides application training for the SEL-300G Generator Relay, a protective relay used for protection and monitoring of all sizes of synchronous generators. Working directly with an SEL-300G in groups of two, you will gain hands-on experience in communicating with the relay, applying settings, metering, monitoring, retrieving event reports, and performing control functions.
APP 311L: SEL-311L Line Current Differential Relay
APP 311L provides comprehensive application training for the SEL-311L Line Current Differential Relay, which offers complete line current differential protection with full scheme distance backup. In groups of two, students gain hands-on experience in communicating, metering, monitoring, commissioning, analyzing event reports, and performing control functions by working directly with the SEL-311L Relay.
APP 351: SEL-351 Protection System
APP 351 provides comprehensive application training for the SEL-351 Protection System, an extremely flexible protective relay used by utilities worldwide, in multiple applications. Working in groups of two, students gain hands-on experience in communicating, setting, metering, monitoring, retrieving event reports, and performing control functions by working directly with the SEL-351S Relay.
APP T400L: SEL-T400L Time-Domain Line Protection
APP T400L covers traveling-wave protection concepts with hands-on application where you will learn about the SEL-T400L Time-Domain Line Protection relay’s protection and fault-locating functions. You will also complete hands-on exercises to configure, set, and test the relay.
APP 411L: 87L Functions in the SEL-411L Relay
APP 411L is an advanced hands-on course that builds on the introductory configuration and protection principles taught in CBT 101, and APP 421 and on the logic configuration principles taught in CBT 104. Students in APP 411L will complete hands-on exercises to configure differential protection and advanced logic. SELogic, distance elements, directional elements, etc., are not covered in this course; students interested in learning about all functions other than 87L should take APP 421 or APP 411L in conjunction with APP 421.
APP 421: SEL-421 Protection, Automation, and Control System
APP 421 provides comprehensive application instruction for the SEL-421 Protection, Automation, and Control System. While working directly with an SEL-421, students will gain hands-on experience in communicating with the relay; setting its protection, metering, and monitoring functions; retrieving and reading event reports; and performing control functions.
APP 451: SEL-451 Protection, Automation, and Bay Control System
This course provides comprehensive hands-on application training for the SEL-451 Protection, Automation, and Bay Control System. Students will learn how to communicate with the relay using ACSELERATOR QuickSet SEL-5030 Software, determine protection settings, and use front-panel bay control features. They will also apply line configuration, overcurrent protection, and output settings within the context of an example 25 kV overhead distribution system. On the third day of this course, students will learn about the relay’s more advanced features, including high-impedance fault detection and directional elements.
APP 487B: SEL-487B Bus Differential and Breaker Failure Relay
Students in the APP 487B course explore implementation of station-wide, low-impedance current differential protection and integrated circuit breaker failure detection using the SEL-487B Bus Differential and Breaker Failure Relay. Single- and three-relay applications for both basic and complex busbar arrangements are covered. Backup overcurrent protection, event recording, automation, and time-synchronization capabilities are discussed. Students will work directly with the SEL‑487B Relay, performing hands-on communications, settings, and testing.
