SEL-2905

SEL-2905

Serial Port Expander

The SEL-2905 adds 16 serial ports to an SEL Real-Time Automation Controller (RTAC) or SEL Port Server. Pair one or more expanders with a host device to scale serial connectivity to as many as 96 ports. The SEL-2905 uses a dedicated, nonroutable link to keep communication between the host and SEL-2905 off the routable network.

Add Serial Capacity to RTAC and SEL Port Server Systems

Expand serial capacity by pairing the SEL-2905 with an RTAC or SEL Port Server. Each expander provides up to 16 software-selectable EIA-232/422/485 ports. Connect multiple units to provide up to 96 serial ports per host device. The host automatically detects connected SEL-2905 expanders and presents their serial ports as native ports. Use the host web interface to enable or disable each expander.

Connect Serial Devices Without Additional IP Configuration

The SEL-2905 communicates with the RTAC or SEL Port Server over a dedicated, nonroutable Layer 2 Ethernet link. This enables serial port expansion without adding IP-addressable devices.

Deliver Port-Level Time and Power Distribution

Distribute time from an upstream source to every connected serial device, with IRIG-B output available on each serial port. In addition, directly power fiber-optic transceivers from the serial ports and remove the need for separate power hardware.

Deploy in Harsh Utility Environments

Tested to utility standards for electromagnetic interference (EMI)/ESD, electrical fast transient (EFT)/burst, surge, magnetic fields, vibration, and shock, every SEL-2905 is designed for long-term reliability and backed by a worldwide, ten-year warranty. SEL provides no-cost technical support for the life of the product.

SEL-2905 Details

The SEL-2905 provides a simple, scalable solution to increase serial connectivity on SEL RTAC and SEL Port Server devices.

Comprehensive Serial Support

Provide flexible serial connectivity by using 16 RJ45 serial ports that support software-selectable EIA-232/422/485 communications, baud rates from 300 to 115,200 bps, and 5 to 8 configurable data bits. Power connected transceivers by using the +5 Vdc port-level output, and maintain accurate time synchronization by using IRIG-B time signals.

Native RTAC or SEL Port Server Integration

The SEL RTAC or SEL Port Server automatically detects all connected SEL-2905 expanders. Configure all ports using acSELerator RTAC SEL-5033 Software—no expander-level setup is required.

Nonroutable Layer 2 Protocol

The SEL-2905 uses a dedicated, nonroutable Layer 2 Ethernet protocol to connect to an RTAC or SEL Port Server, adding serial capacity without introducing other IP-addressable devices.

Flexible Topologies

Connect multiple SEL-2905 devices to a single RTAC or SEL Port Server by using daisy-chain or star topologies.
