New Protocols for SEL-849 Motor Management Relay
Three new protocols are now available for the SEL-849 Motor Management Relay: EtherNet/IP, the IEC 62439 Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) and DNP3. With these additions, the multipurpose protection and control relay can more easily be applied in industrial and utility applications.
EtherNet/IP, which is commonly used in industrial automation networks, allows the SEL-849 to better integrate with process controls. Its availability also eliminates the need for protocol converters, thereby reducing costs and system complexity.
When dual Ethernet ports are selected, the SEL-849 supports PRP and fast failover switching. PRP helps increase communications system reliability, reduces wiring and labor and provides confidence in non-hardwired motor controls.
DNP3 delivers accurate time-stamped data over Ethernet for event reporting and allows the SEL-849 to act as a low-cost telemetry device, both fitting uses for utilities. With DNP3, the relay can be used for end-of-line monitoring; fault location, isolation and system restoration; power metering; and more.
