SEL Meter Helps Data Center Supply High-Quality, Uninterrupted Power
Summary
Challenge
Vantage Data Centers is a wholesale data center provider that operates in Washington and California and will expand operations to the East Coast in early 2019. They are committed to supplying continuously available, high-quality power, to their customers. And because they sell power to their data center customers, they must satisfy the same ANSI and public utility commission (PUC) standards as electric power utilities.
Energy metering is a big deal for Vantage—it’s one of their core competitive advantages. Vantage uses metered power to help keep their energy costs as low as possible and to exercise transparency with their customers. Measuring power quality is also critical to ensure that Vantage customers receive high-quality electric power.
Finding a reliable, accurate, utility-grade metering solution that could also measure power quality was critical to Vantage achieving marketplace success.
Solution
SEL equipped Vantage with the SEL-735 Power Quality and Revenue Meter, which is a fully ANSI 0.1 accuracy class-compliant utility-grade revenue meter. It precisely measures a wide range of power quality indicators, which enables Vantage to measure and report the quality of the power they provide to their customers.
According to Vantage engineers, the SEL meters are easy to set up because almost all necessary settings are preprogrammed right out of the box. Once Vantage sets the PT and CT ratios, the meter is ready to go. In addition, SEL provides strong technical support and can quickly resolve any issues that may arise.
Vantage has programmed the SEL-735 Meters in their facilities to capture power quality, harmonics, and power factor data. The meters are critical to their commitment to meet the utility-grade metering required by regulators and demanded by customers.
Results
The SEL-735 provides Vantage with an outstanding revenue and power quality metering solution in a single device. By meeting or exceeding ANSI and PUC requirements, the SEL-735 supports Vantage’s mission-critical reliability standard by providing energy reliability information and power quality measurements.
The SEL-735 Meter’s waveform capture feature allows Vantage to determine the cause of a trip event, which speeds problem resolution. And because SEL’s local technical team provides proactive support regarding firmware updates, Vantage’s metering devices are always up-to-date.
