TST 700G: Testing SEL-700G Generator Protection Relays

Course Length: 2 Days (PDHs: 15)
Course Based Fees: $1,000*
* Plus Applicable Tax

In this hands-on course, you will test, commission, and troubleshoot SEL-700G Generator Protection Relays and define basic generator protection testing principles. In groups of two, students will work directly with an SEL-700G Generator Protection Relay to simulate operations and to test the relay’s protection settings.

TST 700G is intended for utility and plant technicians, operators, and system consultants with an interest in relay testing and commissioning.

Day 1

  • Getting Started
  • Differential (87) Element Testing
  • Ground Differential (87N) Element Testing
  • Stator Ground (64G) Testing
  • Restricted Earth Fault (REF) Testing
  • Residual Overcurrent Directional (67G) Testing (Optional)
  • Loss-of-Field (40) Element Testing

Day 2

  • Negative-Sequence Current Unbalance (46) Testing
  • Thermal Overload (49T) Testing
  • Overexcitation Volts/Hertz (24C) Testing
  • Out-of-Step (78) Element Testing
  • Power Element (32) Testing
  • Over- and Undervoltage Elements (59/27) Testing (Optional)
  • Frequency Element (81) Testing
  • Voltage-Based Time-Overcurrent (51C, 51V) Testing
  • Distance Backup (21) and Loss-of-Potential Testing

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course, students can:

  • Test, commission, and troubleshoot SEL generator protection.
  • Establish communication with an SEL generator relay using SEL software.
  • Equate Relay Word bits and SELogic control equations to traditional relay element outputs and contact diagram logic.
  • Interpret system one-line diagrams for common protection applications.
  • Develop effective element testing procedures.
  • Calculate relay test points.
  • Apply current to validate element operation and time delays.
  • Retrieve and analyze data recorded by SEL relays.
  • Ensure relay settings are functioning correctly and protection schemes work.

Student Background and Knowledge

Before you attend this class, we recommend that you complete CBT 101: Introduction to SEL Relays OR be familiar with protective relaying, SELogic control equations, front-panel controls, and the SEL-4000 Relay Test System.
