SEL Regina: Motor and Transformer Protection Relays
Description
This course provides an overview of the SEL-710 Motor Protection Relay and the SEL-787 Transformer Protection Relay. Through hands-on activities, students will interact directly with the relays to develop practical skills in configuration, commissioning, event report retrieval, and more.
In the motor protection portion of the course, students will learn how to safeguard induction motors in industrial environments. This course also covers key motor protection application philosophies, including SEL’s patented thermal model.
During the transformer protection section, students will learn simplified calculation methods and best practices for developing settings. The course uses real-world transformer data to reinforce concepts and guide setting recommendations.

Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this course, you will be able to:
- Enter nameplate data with acSELerator QuickSet SEL-5030 Software.
- Calculate and apply settings for the thermal model and thermal overload protection element.
- Determine motor relay settings to meet varied motor protection requirements and to maximize motor performance and safety.
- Retrieve and analyze motor trend reports, start reports, and event reports.
- Apply methods learned in class to troubleshoot and commission motor protection.
- Use QuickSet to read and send settings to the relay.
- Determine system and transformer winding data and configuration settings.
- Calculate CT compensation, operate and restraint, and harmonic blocking settings.
- Apply effective protection for REF, over- and undervoltage, and underfrequency.
- Test settings by observing relay operation after current/voltage is applied.
Student Background and Knowledge
Before you attend this class, we recommend that you:
- Complete CBT 101: Introduction to SEL Relays OR have basic familiarity with protective relaying, SELogic control equations, front-panel controls, and the SEL-4000 Relay Test System.
- Have the ability to set up relay communications using QuickSet.
- Have a basic understanding of power systems and transformer protection theory.
Course Preparation
Install or update the following software/files on the laptop you are bringing to class:
- acSELerator QuickSet SEL-5030 Software (include all device drivers during installation).
- SEL-C662 USB driver.
- SEL-710 instruction manual.
- SEL-787 instruction manual.
Please ensure that your laptop does not have any installation blocks before you come to class.
