Training
APP 651R: SEL-651R Advanced Recloser Control
Description
APP 651R is designed to empower students to apply SEL-651R-2 and SEL-651RA Advanced Recloser Controls for distribution system protection. At the end of this course, students will be able to set and test the SEL-651R for typical distribution protection schemes and use SELogic control equations to customize the operator interface and build advanced protection schemes. Students (in groups of two) will work directly with the SEL-651R, performing hands-on communications, settings, and testing.
Audience
This course is designed for utility and industrial protection engineers and power system consultants.

Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:
- Use acSELerator QuickSet SEL-5030 Software and Design Templates to build protection and automation schemes.
- Explain how individual protection elements work.
- Describe how to test individual protection elements.
- Implement SELogic elements and syntax in the testing of custom logic schemes.
- Commission a new SEL-651R.
- Troubleshoot the SEL-651R battery and recloser interface systems.
Student Background and Knowledge
To be prepared for APP 651R, please complete the free online course CBT 101: Introduction to SEL Relays before attending class. It will introduce how an SEL relay processes digital inputs, analog inputs, digital outputs and targets; how to use QuickSet configuration software; and how SELogic control equations are used for basic relay settings and behavior.
We also recommend that you:
- Complete ePROT 200: Applied Symmetrical Components OR have basic familiarity with symmetrical components.
- Have the ability to set up a communications session between your PC and a relay.
Course Preparation
Install or update the following software/files on the laptop you are bringing to class:
- acSELerator QuickSet SEL-5030 Software (include all device drivers during installation).
- SEL-5601-2 synchroWAVe Event Software.
- SEL-C662 USB driver.
- SEL-651R instruction manual.
Please work with your company's IT resources to ensure that these updates are made prior to class so that you will be able to participate with the class exercises.
