APP 451: SEL-451 Protection, Automation, and Bay Control System

Course Length: 3 Days (PDHs: 23)
Course Based Fees: $1,500*
* Plus Applicable Tax

Description

This course provides comprehensive hands-on application training for the SEL-451 Protection, Automation, and Bay Control System. Students will learn how to communicate with the relay using ACSELERATOR QuickSet SEL-5030 Software, determine protection settings, and use front-panel bay control features. They will also apply line configuration, overcurrent protection, and output settings within the context of an example 25 kV overhead distribution system. On the third day of this course, students will learn about the relay’s more advanced features, including high-impedance fault detection and directional elements.

Audience

This course is designed for utility and industrial engineers, power system designers, and consultants.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this course, students can:

  • Identify the features, functions, and applications of the SEL-451 Relay, including high-speed Ethernet capabilities.
  • Communicate with the relay HMI interface, including pushbuttons, display points, targeting LEDs, and front-panel metering.
  • Use QuickSet to apply relay settings, program SELogic control equations, and test protection operations.
  • Apply the SEL-451 Relay protection, monitoring, metering, and control features, including current and voltage selection logic.
  • Use the relay’s bay control features for disconnect switching applications.
  • Implement relay-to-relay logic via Mirrored Bits communications.
  • Retrieve event reports, COMTRADE files, and Sequential Events Recorder (SER) reports for analysis.
  • Identify switch-on-to-fault protection schemes.
  • Explain the relay’s fault type identification selection logic.
  • Set the relay’s directional elements.
  • Apply settings for high-impedance fault detection using Arc Sense technology (AST).
  • Determine autoreclosing protection settings.
