APP 101: Hands-On Introduction to SEL Relays
Description
APP 101 provides hands-on, introductory-level training for new SEL relay users transitioning from electromechanical devices to digital relay application. Students will learn the basic concepts necessary to successfully apply, communicate, and gather data from an SEL-351S Protection System, with special emphasis on how to set up and navigate SEL settings software.
Audience
This course is designed for utility or plant engineers, technicians, operators, power system designers, government entity personnel, and consultants who are new to digital relaying or SEL relays.

Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this course, students can:
- Describe digital relay protection and operating methods.
- Communicate with the SEL-351S Relay via the front-panel HMI and pushbuttons.
- Send and receive relay settings using QuickSet.
- Identify SEL-351S Relay product features.
- Apply effective protection and coordination settings for an example distribution system.
- Perform tests to verify relay protection element operation.
Student Background and Knowledge
Before you attend this class, we recommend that you have a working knowledge of ac three-phase power systems.
Course Preparation
Install or update the following software/files on the laptop you are bringing to class:
- acSELerator QuickSet SEL-5030 Software (include all device drivers during installation).
- SEL-C662 USB driver.
- SEL-351S instruction manual.
Please ensure that your laptop does not have any installation blocks before you come to class.
