Flexible Hardware Configuration

Order the SEL-9L equipped for your application, and easily adapt it to future needs. Features such as a 48–250 V power supply, software-configurable SFP ports, and software-selectable contact input ranges let you adapt the relay to changes in substation systems and primary equipment. Integrated IEC 61850 protocols enable communications for a variety of applications. Flexible firmware and the ability to mix and match communications-specific SFP transceivers make it easy to install future enhancements and add new functionality.

Advanced Trip Circuit Monitoring (CM)

Reduce operations and maintenance expenses with integrated advanced trip CM—available only from SEL. This feature allows the relay to validate output contact closure and differentiate output contact failure from other potential problems in the circuit, greatly reducing the frequency with which relays must be taken out of service and manually tested. The ability to validate correct operation with existing data in the relay also supports compliance efforts with reliability standards (for instance, NERC PRC-005 for North American utilities). Distance Protection

Protect transmission lines with up to five zones of distance protection. Apply protection using phase or ground quadrilateral or mho elements. The SEL-9L can issue a trip in as little as half a cycle, enabling rapid fault clearing and helping prevent equipment damage. It can be applied on lines of any length or voltage level.

Communications-Assisted Tripping

Provide communications-assisted protection for transmission lines, with schemes settable as permissive overreaching transfer trip (POTT), directional comparison blocking (DCB), or direct transfer trip (DTT). Protection schemes are also configurable as directional comparison unblocking (DCUB), permissive underreaching transfer trip (PUTT), and direct underreaching transfer trip (DUTT) options.

Simple Configuration and Commissioning

Reduce commissioning time, and more efficiently manage device settings with modern, intuitive configuration software. SEL Grid Configurator has a modern interface and customizable HMI screens that provide easy access to all the information needed to set, test, commission, and troubleshoot the SEL-9L. SEL Grid Configurator also features a spreadsheet-style settings editor, powerful protection visualization, comprehensive reporting, custom filters, and multiple-device settings management.

Quickly Upgrade Existing Line Relay Installations

Replace existing line relay installations quickly with a direct-replacement assembly. These preassembled retrofit kits match the footprint and wiring of legacy relays and include wiring labels and diagrams to simplify updates to drawings and installation documentation. Assemblies are available to replace common SEL-321 Phase and Ground Distance Relay and SEL-311C Transmission Protection System models, helping accelerate upgrades to the SEL-9L.

SEL-9L Details

Configurable SFP Ports
Each SEL-9L comes with one fiber SFP transceiver installed. Configure the six available SFP ports with transceivers in various combinations to meet your needs. SFP transceivers can be replaced and reconfigured in the field without removing the relay from the rack or powering it down.Flexible Communications and Networking
The SFP ports provide support for 1 Gbps Ethernet, 100 Mbps Ethernet, IEEE C37.94, and direct peer-to-peer protocols. Two dedicated RJ45 ports provide support for Mirrored Bits communications. In addition, the SEL-9L supports FTP, DNP3 LAN/WAN, and the Parallel Redundancy Protocol (PRP) in accordance with IEC 62439-3, IEC 61850 Edition 2.1, Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) file services, and MMS authentication.Advanced Hardware Features—Flexible and Safe
The SEL-9L is a 3U, 19-inch rack-mount unit. The universal power supply accepts 48–250 Vdc or 100–240 Vac. Depending on the base configuration ordered, the SEL-9L can have up to 23 binary outputs and 21 binary inputs with a software-selectable settings range of 24–250 Vdc or 0–240 Vac. CT inputs are software-selectable as 1 A or 5 A and require no changes to the hardware. Self-shorting terminal blocks can be removed from the relay without risking electrical shock to the technician or damage to the relay—making wiring and testing easier and safer.Comprehensive Protection
