SEL Engineer Rotation Program

Throughout an 18-month program, associate engineers work in three areas of the company, including Research and Development, Engineering Services, Manufacturing, and Application Engineering. Associate engineers are full members of their teams in these rotations, following products through the full life cycle from conception and design to selling and supporting. Each rotation provides an opportunity to explore your passions and refine your discipline within the broad field of engineering and the electric power industry while experiencing a wide slice of SEL culture and work environments.

Associate engineers in the program are paid full-time wages, receive benefits, and have access to the training and resources available to all SEL employee owners. You’re a contributing member of each team, and your ideas will affect our research, products, and processes. Experiencing three separate roles helps build your professional network and knowledge quickly, making you a strong candidate for the engineering career path you choose to pursue.

The Rotations

Specifying, designing, building, testing, and validating hardware and software designs is a core part of SEL’s business. R&D Associate Engineers in the Rotation Program work on projects to improve features that protect critical infrastructure and develop new features to help mitigate a variety of risks. Engineers in this area also perform product testing on devices from the field. A rotation with R&D will build your collaborative skill as you work in teams to develop new designs and improve existing products, and it will strengthen your creative capacity to develop solutions to challenges along the way.

“I wanted to experience working with a team on a product—what is it like working in industry on firmware or software? I’ve had that full experience in R&D now, from development to testing. I am looking forward to seeing my work in the field.”

Mentorship

Explore Your Professional Passions, But Don’t Do It Alone

With so many possible career paths available in electrical and power system engineering, it helps to have a guide as you find your future. Associate engineers work with a mentor and team leads within each rotation to see how their work fits in to larger projects and goals across the company. Whether you have a strong idea of the professional path you want to follow or you are still exploring, your mentor can help you get there with guidance and assistance in roles that take advantage of your strengths while growing your expertise.

“We get to dive into projects. I got to do a lot more technical work than I anticipated. I was given trust and responsibility to dive deep into projects.”

The SEL Culture

Why SEL?

As a 100 percent employee-owned company, our values form the foundation of SEL’s day-to-day work and overall mission: to make electric power safer, more reliable, and more economical. We are problem solvers, inventors, and doers. At SEL, you support a mission that truly matters and create a career that maximizes your potential.

We have over 5,000 employees in more than 100 offices worldwide. Our devices are all manufactured in the United States, and we are actively working to make our supply chain as local as possible. Associate engineers who continue with SEL after completing their rotation program gain a broad foundation and visibility into the company, promoting knowledge sharing between divisions, while those who seek careers elsewhere benefit from improved communication skills and professional relationships built during the program.
