SEL-TWFL

Dual Traveling-Wave Fault Locator and 12-Channel MHz Recorder

The SEL-TWFL provides an accurate fault location by using traveling-wave- and impedance-based methods. Years of field data show that SEL traveling-wave fault-locating technology is accurate to within one tower span. The device also includes line-monitoring logic for locating incipient faults.

The SEL-TWFL is an economical fault locator capable of monitoring series-compensated lines, overhead lines, cable lines, and hybrid transmission lines with both overhead and cable sections. It is suitable for radial, two-terminal, and three-terminal applications, and one SEL-TWFL can monitor two lines from a single substation. For multi-ended fault-locating methods, SEL-TWFL devices exchange data over a communications channel and report fault location locally or via communication protocols to a SCADA system. The SEL-TWFL is an exceptional fault recorder, recording data from as many as six currents and six voltages for as long as 1.2 seconds at a 1 MHz sampling rate with 18 bits of resolution.

Unparalleled Fault-Locating and Line-Monitoring Technology—Reduce the time and effort needed to find faults when dispatching patrol crews to fault locations. The SEL-TWFL includes single- and multi-ended traveling-wave-based fault-locating methods that are accurate to within a single tower span. It also includes single- and multi-ended impedance-based methods. The combination of these methods provides the best accuracy and dependability for any combination of operating conditions and fault types. Use the line-monitoring function for condition-based line maintenance to prevent line faults and to discover weak spots along the line.

Ultra-High-Resolution Recording—Enhance your understanding of high-frequency transients on your power system, such as traveling waves from faults, switching events, breaker restrikes, and self-extinguishing faults. The SEL-TWFL measures and records line currents and voltages with high-fidelity (1 MHz, 18-bit) sampling, offering an enhanced understanding of the events on your power system.

Comprehensive Applications—Accurately locate faults on overhead and cable lines as well as on hybrid lines with both overhead and cable sections. The SEL-TWFL is an excellent choice for series-compensated lines and can be applied on tapped transmission lines.

Applications

Applications

The SEL-TWFL can monitor overhead and cable lines as well as hybrid lines with both overhead and cable sections. The SEL-TWFL is well suited for series-compensated lines and tapped transmission lines. In multi-ended applications, each SEL-TWFL uses an IEEE C37.94-compliant multiplexer—such as the SEL ICON—to exchange fault information with a remote SEL-TWFL to calculate traveling-wave- and impedance-based fault locations. At each line terminal, a line protective relay sends fault locator trigger signals to the connected SEL-TWFL by using either Mirrored Bits communications via an SEL-2814 Fiber-Optic Transceiver With Hardware Flow Control or contact inputs.

Details

Accurate Fault Locating
Locate faults to the nearest tower with field-proven SEL traveling-wave-based fault-locating technology. Obtain a reliable fault location with the multi-ended traveling-wave-based and impedance-based fault-locating methods. Ensure dependable fault locating under a wide range of operating conditions with the multi-ended and single-ended impedance-based fault-locating methods.

Multi-ended methods work over a 64 kbps IEEE C37.94-compliant multiplexed channel and require the SEL-TWFL at each line terminal to be connected over the IRIG-B input to an external IEEE C37.118-compliant clock with submicrosecond accuracy.

In applications without a digital channel, use the single-ended traveling-wave-based fault-locating method and obtain a short, prioritized list of possible fault locations.

Connect the SEL-TWFL to standard protection instrument transformers and program the fault locator trigger based on TRIP outputs from protective relays by using contact I/O or SEL Mirrored Bits communications.

Line Monitoring
Monitor the line for incipient faults, recurring faults, or incipient cable faults. Obtain a location-tabulated event count to detect low-energy activity and faults along the line. Prevent faults by selectively cleaning or replacing insulators, trimming vegetation, improving antigalloping solutions, applying line spacers, or improving lightning protection. The line monitoring logic uses the fault location from the multi-ended traveling-wave-based method, tabulating fault precursor events within defined segments of the line. It alarms if the event count exceeds a user-settable threshold. Line monitoring works over a 64 kbps IEEE C37.94-compliant multiplexed channel and requires the SEL-TWFL at each line terminal to be connected over the IRIG-B input to an external IEEE C37.118-compliant clock with submicrosecond accuracy.

High-Fidelity Recording
The SEL-TWFL measures and records line currents and voltages (12 channels) at a 1 MHz sampling rate. The device stores 50 records with a duration of 1.2 seconds. Trigger data capture from any of the device Relay Word bits (driven by overcurrent, undervoltage, and overvoltage elements), a contact input, an SEL Mirrored Bits input, or any combination thereof. Analyze high-frequency power system events, including lightning strikes, breaker restrikes, and breaker transient recovery voltages, with the exceptional 1 MHz, 18-bit recording capability of the SEL-TWFL.
