Welcome to the 2020 Sales Meeting
Dr. Edmund O. Schweitzer, III
President and Chief Technology Officer
Overview
SEL President, Founder, and Chief Technology Officer Dr. Edmund O. Schweitzer, III, delivers a keynote address sharing our biggest innovations over the past year, what we’re working on for the future, and how we’re keeping the spirit of creativity, innovation, and customer focus alive at SEL.
You can expect to learn about:
The new SEL-T401L Ultra-High-Speed Line Protection relay and the benefits of combining time-domain technology with phasor-based protection.
How using energy packet control instead of traditional governor control virtually eliminates frequency drop and droop.
Fault repeaters and how they extend the range of fault transmitters and overcome physical obstructions.
The new SEL-RPM Redundant Power Module and how it provides uninterrupted ride through during power failures for dc control systems.
How our SDN technology combines IT and operational technology (OT) networks in a way that meets the requirements of substation environments.

SEPTEMBER 17
Expanding Our Industrial Markets by Adding Value for Our Customers.
Thank you!
Doug Freemyer - Power Connections
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: Mr. Freemyer, Yes. If you would like to set up a customer meeting, or even a virtual factory tour, please simply contact your regional SEL S&CS team and let us know. We'll be glad to help you set this up! Thank you!
Mark Geil - Robinson Sales, Inc
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: Mr. Geil -- Please forgive us! That link should have been live already. I will personally check on this ASAP, and we will have the link live via Sales Force Central. I will update this answer when it's ready. Thanks!
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: By noon PST, today, Gary and Jeanne Norland's safety presentation will be available on SFC. Thanks.
Jeff Steib - KD Johnson, Inc.
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: Mr. Steib! Thanks for sharing with us all. I've heard of this, and Mr. Leoni and team shared that this has improved how all are working together, and that it's led to better results and wins already. Very cool! Thank you! Keep it up!
Rich Matzinger - Matzinger-Keegan, Inc.
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: Mr. Matzinger -- Thank you! Influencing product enhancements and development takes data, urgency, and grit. Don't give up!
Luis Pizarro - K D Johnson Inc.
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: Mr. Pizarro -- the hands-on training facilities (in Charlotte, and SLP) will first and foremost be used for internal training, for our Engineering Services field services and commissioning technicians and engineers (so that we may get better), for application engineers (so that we are safe when providing expert customer support), etc. I do believe that we will be able to open these facilities up to customers through SEL University or custom classes, at some point in the future; stay tuned. We'll update all as we develop these capabilities! Thank you.
Wiliam McClements - Utility & Industrial Products
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: Mr. McClements -- Thanks for sharing. That's very cool! Having visibility into your "opportunity pipeline," knowing what data backs up our forecasts, is important. Even better when we can share amongst all of us, and quickly identify how to work together to improve our chances and win business together. Thanks!
Drew MacMichael - Peak Measure
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: Thanks for the feedback, Mr. MacMichael. The powerCORE field services team works hard at their craft, works professionally, clean, safe -- all in very difficult circumstances. Thank you for the pat on the back!
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
Mark Geil - Robinson Sales, Inc
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: Mr. Geil -- I LOVE the enthusiasm! We're excited, too!
Doug Freemyer - Power Connections
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: Let me see what I can do, Mr. Freemyer! Thanks for the request ... stay tuned.
Josiah Matthews - Pro-Tech Power Sales
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: Thank You!
Mr. Matzinger asked if we can make available links to Presidents Kennedy and Reagan's speech videos ... stay tuned.
Mizan Rahman - Honeycom Power & Technology
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: Mr. Matzinger, do you mean for actual faults and field event data? In some cases, we have the operate time from an installed competitor relay, yes. We can always replay event data into competitor relays in the lab, just to document response time. [Spoiler Alert ... they're SLOWER]. We (Marketing, R&D) can work on some cool T401L versus X, Y, Z ... Thanks!
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
Walt Slade - KD Johnson, Inc.
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: Mr. Slade ... what do you mean by "this?" (what are you referring to)
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: Mr. Slade, Synthetic Inertia reminds me of the term "Virtual Generator," that someone creative came up with to describe turning customers' load off, versus adding MW to capacity. In a nutshell, measuring frequency (or similar) to emulate, with renewable generation, the rotating mass inertia of traditional generation is being talked about in many forums. We believe Energy Packets is faster, and better.
Geraldo Rocha - SEL Brazil
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: Dave Whitehead likes to say "wait is not a verb." Fast and secure is the key to Life After SCADA, and will help us realize what Dr. Schweitzer has spoken about many times before ... that we will figure out how to match intermittent sources with loads, to make them more "mittent." :0)
Christopher Turner - Sel
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: The FT50 is priced at $180, while the repeater is priced at $265. Why more? It will extend the range and applications of the FT50 and FR12 system, working around real-world conditions and obstructions, while preserving the high-speed aspect of these systems. (and, to be honest, the FT50 may be priced a bit too low!!! it's a bargain!!!)
John Aiton - Arizona Sun Sales, Inc.
Niraj Shah - Schweitzer Engineering
Walt Slade - KD Johnson, Inc.
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: Yes, Mr. Slade. Well said.
Wiliam McClements - Utility & Industrial Products
David Costello - Schweitzer Engineering
A: Great question, Mr. McClements! We would be HAPPY to do a virtual tour of the new West Lafayette (Purdue) manufacturing facility!
