Overview

PROT 401 is designed for engineers who need a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and solutions for protecting electrical power systems. This course provides an overview of principles and schemes for protecting power lines, transformers, buses, generators, and motors and introduces the fundamentals of wide-area protection.

You will learn basic guidelines for relay application and settings calculation. You will also review basic power system concepts and learn about instrument transformers.

Course Requirements


Prerequisites

A degree in electrical engineering or equivalent experience is required. In addition, you should have:

  • A basic knowledge of power systems.
  • A working knowledge of ac three-phase electrical circuits, trigonometry, basic calculus, complex numbers, and phasor concepts.

Recommended reading:

  • Any electric machinery book that covers transformers, synchronous generators, and induction motors.
  • Any power system analysis book that covers per-unit quantities, symmetrical components, and fault analysis.
