Schweitzer Wellbeing Center to Temporarily Close for Major Renovation and Expansion

PULLMAN, Wash. — The Schweitzer Wellbeing Center (SWC) will temporarily close beginning May 1, 2026, to undergo a significant renovation and expansion designed to enhance the facility and better serve the community for years to come. The closure is expected to continue through September 2026. The renovation represents a major investment in the future of the SWC. Planned improvements include upgrades to the HVAC system, renovation of the natatorium (pool area) and locker rooms and construction of a 13,000-square-foot addition that will accommodate an enhanced workout area, flexible fitness classroom and meeting space, and larger lobby. “We recognize that this closure will come as an inconvenience—especially for members who rely on the Schweitzer Wellbeing Center as part of their daily routines,” said Vice President of Property Jana Schultheis. “This building has been well used for the past 25 years, and renovation is necessary to modernize the facility, address critical building system and mechanical needs and deliver a greatly improved experience for our members.” Due to the nature of the construction, the facility must be fully closed during a significant portion of the renovation. SWC employees will have the option to continue working during the closure at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL). In anticipation of the project, the Schweitzer Wellbeing Center has been offering month‑to‑month memberships only. Following the completion of the renovation, the center will expand its membership offerings to include annual memberships, providing greater flexibility and value to the community. While the facility will reopen to the public in October, some construction activity will continue into early 2027 as final improvements are completed. Every effort will be made to ensure a safe, welcoming and high‑quality experience during this transition period. “We are grateful for the patience and understanding of the community,” said Vice President of Business Erik Newman. “This project allows us to reimagine the center as a more versatile, functional and modern space that better meets the evolving needs of local families, fitness enthusiasts and community groups.” Additional updates, including reopening details and new membership options, will be shared as the project progresses. About Schweitzer Wellbeing Center SWC is a community-focused health and fitness facility in Pullman, Washington, owned and operated by SEL. The facility was originally funded by a generous gift from the Schweitzer family and opened in 2000 before being donated to the Pullman School District.
