In 2025, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) purchased the Pullman Aquatic and Fitness Center from the Pullman School District, marking a new chapter for this important community resource—just in time for its 25th anniversary. Since its opening in 2000, the Pullman Aquatic and Fitness Center has served families, students, and athletes across the Palouse. From swim lessons and high school meets to fitness classes and open swim hours, the center has been a cornerstone of wellness and water safety for all ages and backgrounds. Starting soon, SEL will modernize the facility to improve safety, comfort, and energy efficiency. Additionally, the facility will expand its hours and programming to better serve Pullman area families, students, and seniors. Reflecting its expanded community offerings, the upgraded facility will be called the Schweitzer Wellbeing Center.The Schweitzer family helped establish the aquatic center in 2000 with a $2.5 million gift. In the years since, Ed and Beatriz Schweitzer have continued to support the facility.   “Times change, and the aquatic center is in need of updates and maintenance,“ said Dr. Ed Schweitzer. “Financial conditions are also quite different today than three decades ago. SEL, Beatriz, and I are happy to ensure this valued community asset continues to thrive for decades to come. We feel this is very much in keeping with the SEL value of Community.”

Pullman School District Sale of Aquatic Center to SEL Finalized
PULLMAN, Washington — The Pullman School District is pleased to announce the finalized sale of the Pullman Aquatic & Fitness Center to Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), marking a new chapter for the facility as it celebrates its 25th year of operation.Originally built in 2000 with a $2.5 million gift from the Schweitzer family, the aquatic center has served as a hub for health, recreation and community connection across the Palouse. The $5 million investment split between SEL and Dr. Edmund O. Schweitzer III, and his wife, Beatriz, will ensure the center remains open to the public. As part of this transition, SEL will rename the facility the Schweitzer Wellbeing Center—a name that honors the Schweitzer family’s original gift and ongoing support, while reflecting a commitment to communitywide health and wellness.

SEL Property Team Finalizes New Roof Project
SEL recently completed a project to install a new roof on the Pullman Aquatic and Fitness Center. The 14,200-square-foot project was completed by Granite Enterprises Inc. of Rathdrum, Idaho. The old roofing membrane and insulation were fully removed and replaced with new materials to ensure long-term durability and energy efficiency. The upgrade also included new flashing, parapet caps and trim for added protection. Work began Sept. 29 and was completed Oct. 24. This investment helps ensure the center remains safe, functional and ready to serve the community for years to come. Stay tuned for more updates!
