Reflecting on 40 Years of Innovation

As we reflect on our 40th anniversary this year, we want to thank all who have journeyed with us. Employees, suppliers, customers, and the communities we belong to—we’re grateful for the mutual partnership and support you have shared with us as we pursue our mission to make electric power safer, more reliable, and more economical.Everyone needs reliable electric power. That’s why Dr. Ed Schweitzer invented the world’s first microprocessor-based relay and founded SEL to manufacture and sell it—so that we could spend less time worrying about whether the lights will turn on and more time innovating. In the 40 years since Otter Tail Power Company became the first SEL customer, we have grown from seven employees in Dr. Schweitzer’s basement to 6,500 employees around the world. We’re fortunate to have played a role in improving everyday life, and we’re excited about what the future will bring.
