Microgrid System Design, Control, and Modeling Challenges and Solutions

Date held: June 12, 2019
Duration: 62 min

Microgrids are electrical grids capable of islanded operation separate from a utility grid. These grids commonly include a high percentage of renewable energy power supplies, such as photovoltaic (PV) and wind generation. Microgrids, therefore, commonly have problems related to their low system inertia and the intrinsic limitations of power electronic sources.

During this webinar, we look at these issues and share our experiences in designing, installing, and testing successful microgrid control systems. The webinar covers the following topics:

  • Simplifying the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs)
  • How to use relays for simple microgrids
  • Using relays and controllers for complex systems
  • How to accomplish truly “seamless” islanding, including detection, decoupling, and resynchronization
  • Power management for microgrids, including:
    • Power factor control
    • Demand response
    • Dispatch of renewables
    • Ultra-fast load shedding
    • Volt/VAR management
    • Generation optimization
    • Frequency control
  • The importance of factory testing prior to deployment and how it enhances project success
  • Best practices for operational technology (OT) networking equipment and cybersecurity
