SEL Engineering Services approaches all projects with an unwavering commitment to safety.

Safety Training and Procedures

We employ methodical, detail-oriented programs and practices to keep people and equipment safe. Our approach includes comprehensive employee training and evaluation, as well as a thorough event reporting and investigation process.

We do not initiate field work without a step-by-step plan that includes review from an expert. To place barriers against hazards, we integrate human performance improvement (HPI) tools in our everyday work, including peer-check requirements, policy adherence, and three-way communication. Our employees approach their work with a questioning attitude and feel empowered to stop work when an event occurs that may compromise safety.

To reinforce safety processes and continuously educate employees, we communicate lessons learned and success stories throughout Engineering Services.

Training

SQEW Training

To work in the field, Engineering Services personnel are required to complete SEL Qualified Electrical Worker (SQEW) training. This multiday course includes real-world exercises and covers topics including the following:

  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E®
  • Shock and arc-flash hazards and approach boundaries
  • Risk assessment
  • HPI tools and applications
  • Personal protective equipment, in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and NFPA 70E
  • Substation equipment, entry, and protocols
  • Step and touch potential
  • Control of hazardous energy (lockout/tagout)
  • Electrically safe work conditions
  • Situational awareness
  • Project safety plan
  • Daily tailboard
  • Energized Electrical Work Permit
  • Stop work procedure
  • Other electrical safety topics that meet or exceed industry requirements

Employees’ competencies are assessed through a comprehensive written test and an on-the-job evaluation from a qualified worker.

Commissioning Qualification

Engineering Services delivers a tiered commissioning qualification program to personnel working in the field. After completing the necessary training, employees seeking qualification accompany qualified employees on multiple commissioning trips and demonstrate their understanding of the material through questions, real-world exercises, and hands-on performance. A committee then interviews employees to assess their readiness for qualification and provides a final recommendation.

SEL Field Safety Manual Training

Additional training is delivered to all SEL employees who perform work at customer sites that may expose them to hazardous conditions. This training instructs employees on identifying and avoiding hazards and performing risk assessments. Additional training is delivered to employees based on the unique hazards they may encounter at specific job sites. All training and refresher courses are completed in accordance with OSHA and NFPA 70E requirements.

Charlotte Substation Simulator

A hands-on training resource that simulates a substation control house and yard was introduced at the SEL Charlotte, North Carolina, office in August 2021. Through the simulator, Engineering Services employees practice working directly with transmission and distribution equipment and performing safety procedures as they would at customer sites. The simulator is part of the mandatory training delivered to Engineering Services employees who work independently in the field.

Event Reporting and Investigation

To proactively educate employees and enforce protections against hazards, we employ a comprehensive event reporting and investigation program. Engineering Services gathers information from employees who encounter hazards or potential hazards in their work and broadly communicates good catch/near miss events and why they are crucial to safety performance.
