Jim Alves-Foss

Distinguished Professor, Center for Secure and Dependable Systems Director

Dr. James (Jim) Alves-Foss joined the University of Idaho in 1991 after receiving his PhD in Computer Science at the University of California, Davis. He taught the first UI cybersecurity course in 1992. In 1999, he co-founded the Center for Secure and Dependable Systems (CSDS) and has been its sole director since 2004.

He's published 125 peer reviewed conference and journal papers, primarily in cybersecurity. He’s mentored 22 PhD students, over 40 MS students and numerous undergraduates. His work has been sponsored by federal agencies including NSF, DoD, and industry. Most recently, Dr. Alves-Foss led the effort to receive Idaho State Board of Education Approval for Idaho’s first Bachelor of Science degree in Cybersecurity, starting Fall 2020.
