Vice President of Marketing

As vice president of Marketing at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL), Bryan leads the teams responsible for global strategy, promotion, visibility, events, and technical education.

Previously, Bryan was a principal engineer in SEL Research and Development (R&D), where he served as the distribution automation technology owner and product owner for the Distribution Management System application suite. He has held a variety of positions within both R&D and SEL Engineering Services, including automation group manager. As group manager, he was responsible for utility and industrial automation projects throughout the United States and internationally, from initial bid to commissioning and training.

A patented inventor, Bryan has guided the development of numerous distribution automation solutions, including fault location, isolation, and service restoration (FLISR), heuristic volt/VAR control, photovoltaic plant control, industrial high-speed load shedding, and wide-area data collection, visualization, and monitoring systems.

Bryan received his BSEE from the University of Idaho and is a member of IEEE and PES.

A recognized leader in utility and industrial control system cybersecurity, Whitehead has testified before the U.S. Senate and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on the importance of innovation and protecting against cyberattacks. He has presented at numerous cybersecurity conferences and authored dozens of papers on the topic.

For more than a decade, Whitehead led the SEL Research and Development Division, an 800-person multidisciplinary team responsible for the research, design, development, and testing of systems that manage, monitor, and control critical electric infrastructure.

Since joining SEL in 1994, he has been a driver of product and talent development and been instrumental in the development of the steady stream of inventions to come out of SEL. He has been awarded more than 73 patents around the world.

Whitehead received his BSEE from Washington State University and his MSEE from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is a senior member of IEEE and a registered Professional Engineer in Washington, New York, Michigan, and North Carolina.
