SEL Enhances TiDL Technology and Releases New Merging Unit

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories has begun rolling out its enhanced Time-Domain Link (TiDL) technology solution, which is a protection-centered digital secondary system that replaces copper with fiber to decrease costs and increase safety. It now features a purpose-built merging unit, data-sharing capabilities and modern configuration software.

In TiDL’s point-to-point architecture, the new SEL-TMU TiDL Merging Unit is placed in the substation yard to sample and digitize analog values from primary equipment. It can directly transmit those data via a non-Ethernet protocol to as many as four SEL TiDL relays located in the control house, providing application flexibility and strong cybersecurity.

The enhanced SEL-451 Protection, Automation, and Bay Control System TiDL relay that communicates with the SEL-TMU is now available. Enhancements to the other existing SEL-400 series TiDL relays will release over the course of the next several months.

Because TiDL does not require Ethernet switches, routers or external time sources, it is simple to implement. The new SEL Grid Configurator software, which is available with the enhanced TiDL relays, makes configuring and commissioning devices and custom topologies to fit each application easier too. The software maps the merging unit’s I/O to the local I/O of the relay and verifies all connections and hardware. It also allows users to give customized names to SEL-TMU inputs and outputs to make the mapping configuration more intuitive.
