SEL Technology Protects World’s Deepest Supergiant Oil Field
Advanced protection, monitoring and control systems keep critical processes online and personnel safe.
PULLMAN, Wash. — Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is providing a new integrated protection, monitoring and control system for Kazakhstan’s Tengiz oil field. The completed system will maximize process uptime, protect personnel and provide a reliable supply of electricity to Tengizchevroil (TCO).
To expand oil production capability and improve the pressurization of its existing wells, TCO is adding 13 new substations and 60 low-voltage operations buildings. SEL is the single-source supplier for low-, medium-, and high-voltage levels of protection, arc-flash mitigation, intelligent motor controls, communication, and electrical control systems equipment. SEL systems will protect and control 6 high-voltage gas-insulated switchgear, 20 air-insulated medium-voltage switchgear, and more than 160 motor control centers. These systems include the protection of SEL’s comprehensive cybersecurity technology.
SEL Engineering Services experts are providing a comprehensive electric power system management system. This includes subcycle load-shedding and seamless islanding controls to prevent electric power blackouts and keep the process online. Real-time hardware-in-the-loop testing is being used to ensure all systems operate as intended, thus reducing commissioning and startup time. SEL’s facility-wide integrated solution also includes a condition monitoring system to improve situational awareness of process equipment and provide data for a predictive maintenance program.
